
Why do I need a P.A.T. certificate?
Over 1,000 incidents involving electric shocks in the workplace are reported to the Health & Safety Executive every year. Many of these incidents result in a fatality. You will need a P.A.T. certificate in order that you can be sure that your portable appliances are safe to use by personnel. Equipment used in establishments or institutions such as schools, hotels, shops and hospitals name but a few of the kinds of places where appliances will need to be tested. Any equipment which is to be hired out will also need to be tested.
What is the stance of the Health & Safety Executive on this matter?
The Health & Safety Executive requires the appliances concerned are kept well maintained by the individuals who use them. The employer or business owner has a duty of care to ensure that the equipment is safe to use. This includes those who are self employed.
Is it mandatory for my business to have my appliances P.A.T. tested?
Legislation states that there is a strict duty of care with regards to the individuals who use the equipment. Whilst testing is not mandatory, if an accident were to occur, the authorities will see that you take the care of your equipment seriously by seeing evidence of periodic testing.
What are typical examples of appliances which need testing?
Some examples include irons, hair dryers, photocopiers, televisions, portable heaters, drills and disc sanders.
Would I be breaking the law if I did not have a P.A.T. testing certificate?
In the event of an accident at work it is the employer’s responsibility to safeguard their employees as best they can against electric shock. The employer may be fined up to £5,000 in the event of an incident.
In what way does your City & Guilds qualification enable you to carry out the necessary requirements of the P.A.T. testing?
The City & Guilds qualification means that we have had the training necessary in order to carry out testing safely and competently.
Do I need to have my appliances tested annually?
The law does not require that you have testing carried annually, although doing so will ensure that your equipment is safe to use. Some types of fault can be fixed during testing.
Are any of my appliances at risk of breakage whilst the P.A.T. tests are carried out?
There is no risk of damage to your appliances whilst testing is carried out.
Is it necessary for the appliances to be disconnected from the mains electricity supply whilst they are assessed?
Yes, the appliances will need to be unplugged for testing.
An interruption during the working day may have an adverse effect on my establishment. Would it be possible for you to conduct P.A.T. testing after the close of business?
